Writing on Taboo Topics; How to Be Fearless

There are many reasons writers will edit/censor their work, and I am guilty of doing the same… For example Fear of being politically incorrect Personal issues that may be too clear and might expose something you’re unwilling to share Worry of what someone might think; touching on sensitive subjects or it just makes you uncomfortable And the worst mistake any writer can make… Trying to appeal to everyone; Playing it safe Are you guilty of censoring your pen for the sake of status, personal opinion and/or judgment? Are there times when you would love to just go crazy and spill the beans (or ink) on a topic that you know may offend and/or scare away your readers?

Occupy Your Writing.

Why do people choose to write the things that they write? I guess I've always assumed people are compelled to write because they are passionate about their subject matter or intriqued by the specific genres they take on. But I've started to realize the extent to which politics and/or popular culture (the "market") influence first the decision to write in the first place and then the things we choose to write about. It's made me reevaluate my own reasons for writing.

I've always wanted to write a book

I've always wanted to write a book. I'm going to be writing about issues like same-sex attraction and I'm a bit apprehensive but I've decided that the time is now.. I'm taking it one word at a time, one day and a time and I hope to God it turns out readable!! Have you always wanted to write a book? Now is the time..

Taboo?

Tell it like it is.”
That advice paid off for Aaron Neville since 1967, along with, “Don’t be ashamed to let your conscience be your guide.” But for most of us it isn’t that easy.
In Speak Your Mind, Damnit and How To Be Fearless, two bloggers ponder self-censorship and the question of offending, or not, their readers. They remind us that sex, religion and politics are known taboos, but I believe I’ve found another that’s just as intimate, personal and potentially polarizing: food. These days everyone seems to have strong opinions about dietary preferences, yet when I say I don’t eat meat, I’ve been challenged explain why; muted by manners. Well, no more. I’m reprising my post Eat S*** and Die and telling it like it is. Carnivores should prepare to be offended, and maybe even persuaded...

Speak Your Mind, Dammit!

I seem to have lost focus on why I write and this article helped me to see that I've gotten away from my "evil little gnome" spirit that makes people wonder why I'm not in a mental hospital.
I like being the devil's advocate and speaking on taboo topics is the way to go in that area. So, I shall return to the land of the politically incorrect and say what needs to be said in a way that should be said so people feel terribly uncomfortable about it all, and hopefully, will do something about it.
Pray for me.

From Frightened to Fearless Writing

Magic In The Backyard asks what are the Taboo subjects that people don't feel comfortable writing about. She also wonders for what reasons do writers censor their work. This is my story about being a fearless writer, experiencing an event that made me afraid to write all together, and finding my way back to being fearless again.
