Women’s business groups & social networking - are they better than men?

A few weeks ago I was doing a spot of, what could loosely be called, 'research' for the Mowgli Foundation.  It's purpose was to find out whether I could engage online with business development organisations based in the Middle East with a view to them becoming partners of the Charity in the long term.

As I worked through the first 12 organisations, seeing if they were on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube or Slideshare; and whether they had a blog or if they'd been added to Delicious I was struck by one oddity ... typically they were almost all male in focus and typically they weren't active on the social web either.  With the exception of the one female support group who were all over the place ......!

I recently came across a blog post discussing “Women’s Business Groups and Social Networking, Are They Better Than Men?” The post makes the assertion that while most business groups are dominated by men, the women’s business groups do a better job at social networking, with a larger presence on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Social Networking - for the youngsters and Women only?

Having come across an interesting blog by the Mowgli Foundation (www.mowgli.org.uk) "Women's business groups & social networking - are they better than men?" http://bit.ly/aUBalq. I wondered if this was the issue with Social Media within the Fresh Produce industry, or should I say the lack of Social Media within Fresh Produce. Being a passionate supporter of the industry and having recently discovered the "power" of Social Media, I am trying to understand why there are not more businesses, growers, suppliers, marketeers and the like embracing this new medium.
