Why Recycle? You Tree Huggers Are All Stupid
That's according to a recent Newsweek article. It's an interesting story, and gives us insight into the perspective of how so many people think. The writer makes the case that the impact humans will have on the environment, relative to the scope of the entire history and future of the world, is insignificant. The truth is most people are lazy and apethetic to the world outside of their own bubble and it's always easy to justify doing nothing. Things like recycling and conserving resources do require some effort and can feel like it doesn't really do much in the big picture of the universe. There may be some truth to this. Throwing that water bottle in the recylce bin instead of the trash may not have much of an impact on the world ten million years from now, but it does affect the world we live in today. By the same logic, since we can never end world hunger, should we not feed a hungry child? The point is, wastefullness and pollution are slothful and destructive qualities that we should not encourage. Do something positive and contructive, if not for the rest of us or the earth, for yourself. You'll be a better person. http://menofmind.com/?p=327

We treehuggers are not stupid
I wonder, are all tree hugger stupid for recycling? Since I fall into the tree hugging category, I instantly go on the defense. Then, I remember a speech I gave a few months ago at college.
I didn't "go green" to save the planet - I did it for my wallet.

Personal Responsibility for the Earth (and Our Blessings)
I wonder sometimes why I care. Some say that our personal actions make little difference in our world. People still drive in Hummers and shop till they drop. No matter what I do, the world keeps on turning and burning.
So why do greenies like myself continue to recycle while others remain apathetic? It's an issue of personal responsibility and stewardship. Whether you believe in the butterfly effect or the G-d of Israel, or perhaps both, we are meant to be a positive force in the world.
