When Books Are Better Than the Movies!

My new favorite book of the moment is by Philippa Gregory, and is "The Boleyn Inheritance". Correlations are made to Gregory's other novel, "The Other Boleyn Girl", with characters reappearing from the first novel. It's a walk back into time where one person holds the power of life and death over not just a set group of people, but all subjects of England. This is definitely a story that is better as a read than as a movie shrunk into two or two and a half movies (much like "The Other Boleyn Girl")

Discussing the ways books are better than movies and also which chick lit novels have been made into movies and how well they translated onto the big screen.

Even kids can tell that books are better...

My 7 year old son and I had a discussion on books vs. movies after he watched James and the Giant Peach. His teacher had read it to the class, and he noticed there were a lot of differences, and he preferred the book's version of events. I am hoping this will help convert him to an avid reader. I think it takes longer to learn to evaluate books and the movies based on them as separate entities.

Catch-22: It’s the best there is

Following the path of countless films based on literature, Catch-22 misses the mark. On its own it is a funny and generally enjoyable movie that doesn’t quite make its social commentary clear. Does it attack the senseless bureaucracy now synonymous with the book’s title? Yes, in the way a kitten attacks string. You can see what it’s getting at but it’s not making much progress. Does it criticize war profiteering and the over zealous pursuit of the almighty dollar with a total disregard for life and liberty? More or less. But there are so many things going on the point is not brought to the forefront.
In a fit of irony the loss of large amounts of character development led the movie to become too chaotic to truly portray the chaoticness of the novel. The characters stumble along as Yosarian tries harder and harder to stay on the ground and out of harm’s way. The true insanity of his situation is lost.

my open book

my life is literally an open book where anyone can come read about me anytime they want to know more. My day to day life.
The books I usually think are better than the movies is when I read the books first.
S.E. Hinton's "Outsiders" was definitely better. You sure don't picture skinny Matt Dillon as Dally when you read it.
Though I like the first movie, Anne Rice's "Interview with a Vampire" series was a lot better reading than watching. Bradd Pitt and Tom Cruise did a wonderful job, but it could have been done a lot better.

When Movies are Better than Books

You often hear the complaint that the book is better than the movie. It shouldn't be surprising that this is often the case, especially if you have read the book first. Why?
My blog posting ponders some reasons why books always seem better, but I do come up with at least one example of a movie that I thought was better than the book, a book that is rather highly regarded in its own right.

Books are better then movies

Reading movies (or television shows eg. Trueblood) is a lot better then seeing it on the t.v. The books tend to explain more and give you a better perspective of what is going on, which in turn makes it better for us to understand.
