What is your favourite quote from a novel of all time?

A hard question to answer, I know!  But let’s get a collection going, I am eagerly anticipating to hear yours, and I think that this could make for a really amazing and original project - not your average " classic famous quotes collection", but an expression of our uniqueness as writers and readers.  If you’ve got a tie (or two, or three…) feel free to post them all!  If it's a success, other fabulous collections of lines from poetry or song lyrics could come next, on your blog or mine.

I'm starting things out with:

“It’s curious to think of all the human beings who live out their whole lives without feeling the need to make the slightest comment, the slightest objection, the slightest remark.  Not that these comments, these objections, these remarks are addressed to anyone in particular, or intended to have any sort of meaning; but, even so, it seems to me to be better, in the end, that they be made.” – Michel Houellebecq, Platform

Favorite Quotes From My Favorite Books

This is just a small snippet of a few of my fav quotes from books that I've read a million times and will never be sick of reading. Whenever I open any of these books I dive right into them and don't like to have to put them down until I reach the last page. I hope everyone has at least one book they enjoy that much!

My All-Time Favorite Quote from a Novel

I don’t have a favorite movie, song, band, food, or anything else really. I have lists of favorites in each category, but they tend to swap positions depending on my mood. However, when it comes to books, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has always been in the number one spot. My second favorite book changes monthly it seems, but nothing out there has managed to jostle the little blonde Alice and her amazing adventures through Wonderland from that top position.
My favorite quote from the book, and from any novel in general, has also always remained the same.
“’But I don’t want to go among mad people,’ Alice remarked.
‘Oh, you can’t help that,’ said the Cat. ‘We’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.’
‘How do you know I’m mad?’ said Alice.
‘You must be,” said the Cat. ‘or you wouldn’t have come here.’”

My favourite quote from a novel of all time?

I’m writing this post in response to a call from this website wishing to catalogue the best book quotes ever: http://www.practiceofmadness.com
This is an excerpt from; ‘So long & thanks for all the fish’ the 4th book in the Hitch Hiker Series at the End of Chapter 40, written by Douglas Adams.
Arthur, Fenchurch and a damaged robot called Marvin, have bought tickets to see one of the most amazing sights in the universe; ‘Gods final message before he got fed up and did a runner into the void. This section starts by describing the scene, and then explains that the message was written in huge letters, burning with the brilliance of the heavens, across the Quentulus Quazgar Mountains. If they looked at the letters directly, it would have burned their optic nerves, so they had to use the damaged robot to read them out.
The one thing I love about it is that the reader has write each letter down… and when you see the message it makes you laugh at the absurdity.
Enjoy.

Favorite quote from a novel?

The idea of a favorite quote from a novel lead me to ask myself "What is your favorite opening line from a novel?" What would other people choose as their favorite opening line?

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

I beat against the coffin with so much force that Jax finally let me out. He put me in this place like some kind of animal, because I attacked a few travelers last night. Jax blamed himself for creating me. The truth is the fault belongs to another. One day she will answer for the monster that I have become.
When my best friend Clara Jane asked me over for dinner and of course I said yes. Her brother Jackson "Jax" was the hottest guy in school.
I sat down at the dinner table all hell broke loose. Clara Jane leapt across her razor sharp fangs sank into the neck. The room became cloaked in a foggy haze as the life slowly slipped from my body. Jax came out of nowhere and ripped her off me.
"Clara Jane...You-Have-Been-A-Very-Naughty-Girl!"

What is your favourite quote from a novel of all time?

"It pleased him to imagine God as someone like his mother, someone beleaguered by too many responsibilities, too dog-tired to monitor an energetic boy every minute of the day, but who, out of love and fear for his safety, checked in on him whenever she could. Was this so crazy? Surely God must have other projects besides Man [sic], just as his parents had responsibilities other than raising their children? Miles liked the idea of a God who, when He at last had the opportunity to return His attention to His children, might shake His head with wonder and mutter, "Jesus. Look what they're up to now." A distractible God, perhaps, one who'd be startled to discover so many of His children way up in trees since the last time He looked. A God whose hand would go rushing to His mouth in fear in that instant of recognition that--good God!--that kid's going to hurt himself. A God who could be surprised by unanticipated pride--glory be, that boy is a climber!" (Richard Russo, Empire Falls).

What are your favorite all time quotes?

Quotes stolen from movies, music, literature and friends infiltrate our daily language. I've seen the smirky smile that is snuck between two people when one recognizes the quote from a new movie or cheeky television show. I've been the one with the sly smile when I recognize it in others.
