What motivates people to work hard and make a difference?

Forget everything you know about how to motivate people - whether at work, at school, at home. According to Daniel H. Pink, the author of the New York Time's bestselling book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, we've got it all wrong.

In his paradigm-shifting book, Pink explains that the secret to high performance and satisfaction in today's world is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.  In Drive, he reveals the 3 elements of motivation: autonomy, mastery and purpose.

Alternative Business and Life Model...Serve Others

Reading this article about what motivates people to work hard validated my inner desires to volunteer my time, talents and possessions. Whereas mainstream business models focus on working with the purpose of bringing in money, this alternative/volunteer model focuses on giving out resources. The result is higher personal satisfaction and greater community health/wellbeing. Thank you to the blogger who posted the article and its extremely effective video. Have you found yourself wondering what on earth am I here to do?? This article/video will set you on a great path of discovery.

Know Your "Why"

What is the primary thing overall that you want to achieve out of life? What is your reason for doing anything and everything; what is your mission statement? Knowing your purpose in life or your "why" can lead to greater ease of decision-making. Letting other people know your "why" can lead to people helping you achieve it, instead of accidentally getting in the way.

Cash is a poor incentive to boost your employees' performance

Great article to highlight Dan Pink's points. I have listened to Mr. Pink several times and seen him in person at the PPAI show in Las Vegas. His "counter intuitive" reasoning makes sense and there is a lot of data to back it up.
In the employee incentive programs that we put together for clients of Flat World Design, we have seen 'again and again and again' the futility of cash rewards as a motivator. Rather, employees are intrinsically motivated and any external motivation is sought in terms of peer recognition. That's where we come in to help set up awards and recognition programs which work over the long run and are perceived as being 'genuine' in nature.
