What inspired us to write

As children, we all had those favorite books or movies, characters or stories that inspired us to write. These are the things that stick with us even as adults, and the things we look back to when we need encourgement or a reminder as to why we write what we write. Mine was comic books. What about yours?

Why Write

I have often wondered what drives a person to write, and more to the point, why I write. On occasion I have examined my need to write in my own poetry and prose. ”Why Write” came about not long after I began reading my poetry a loud at the Salisbury Art Centre Poetry Café and one of the audience members asked me why I wrote. I have been asked this question a number of times over the years and as all the others at this time I wasn’t able to come up with an adequate answer. The question rattled around in my head for quite some time after the latest asking until I was driven to write “Why Write”.

What Inspired You to Write?

What inspired you to write? That was asked of me today. I've been writing stories so long (ever since I could form full sentences), I can't even remember exactly why I started. Through stories we can discover new worlds and live the impossible. That's why my favorite genres have always been science fiction and fantasy.
But I do recall one man who thoroughly inspired me - Arthur C. Clarke.

What inspired us to write.

I'll quote Dr Fay B Nash first
"What a man really wants is creative challenge with sufficient skills to bring him within the reach of success so that he may have the expanding joy of achievement". Amen to that.Similar notable quotes can be found attesting to the importance of creativity over control. Unfortunately our societies relegate creativity to back room exhibits where they can be controlled.
The mindset that sees creativity as a taboo was born and imprinted through an education system that drove the fear of God into us for making mistakes-singing to the tune of Law and Order.
Writing finds its zenith in times of enforced uniformity, regimentalism or oppression: in school, in prison, in emotional entrapment. The individual often finds themselves obliged to conform to institutional values hyperbolic to the state.

Can I Share my Achievement ?

When my grandson was accidentally shot through the head, his mother began to blog about her family's experience. Her writing was inspirational, a real testament to the strength of the human spirit under the unimaginable.
When my comments on her writing drew favorable comments from her readers; then my son suggested that I write on my own.
I thought, why not. Worse case scenario--no readers.
Thus it began - out of tragedy -- victory in more ways than one.

What inspired you to write? Or rather, 'Who'?

From the seed: What inspired us to write?
In my world it's not about what inspired me to write, rather who. This article traces relevant experiences and the relationship which sealed the deal, when it came to having a writer's soul.
