Water Water Everywhere: Desalination

Lanzarote have been pioneers in the desalination of water on a big scale. They have had the task of delivering fresh water to all the inhabitants of the island as well as tourists. Lanzarote has no fresh water so the task of finding a way to deliver fresh water has been essential for the islands survival. The desalination plant has been a success in taking water from the sea and removing the salt so it is fit for human consumption and agriculture. Unfortunately the desalination plant also emits a lot of pollution. However, since 1991, Inalsa – the water company on Lanzarote – has invested in alternative energies such as wind farms.
