(Un)Social Networking

A review of the impact of social networking on communication and conversation between members of the general public. It considers the mass and wealth of information that is placed on websites such as Facebook and Twitter whilst it concedes the usefulness of the technology for promoting stronger relationships between distancing parties.

The Point of This Post (yes, I do have one) is to share a few websites I've joined since becoming a dedicated blogger.  Bear in mind that I have only been blogging regularly since last August, so this may be old news to you.  At any rate, I've found these sites useful in building my blog:

Does Alexa ranking matter to you?

One topic that bloggers and webmasters always seem to debate about is Alexa ranking.  In case you do not know what Alexa ranking is, it is a ranking system that is based on traffic to your site.  I relate it to the Nielsen ratings for TV.  Alexa makes their determinates by looking at traffic from those users that have the Alexa toolbar installed.  Many folks in the web world will make a judegement that the lower your Alexa scorte, the better your site.  For example, Google has an Alexa ranking of 1.  It seems that bloggers are split right down the middle with s

10 Things The ‘iPod Generation’ Will Never Experience…

Hey you kids! Get the hell off my lawn! With your gameboys and iPods and knife crime. You don’t know you’re born. Back in my day we’d walk seven miles to pick up a CD from our local record store. Uphill. Both ways.

Procrastinating? Click here

If there was a class on procrastination – I would get an A+. Currently, through my five years of university thus far, I have learned how to write an essay, how to study, but most of all, amazing ways to procrastinate!

Procrastination is often thought of as being a bad thing; however, in reality, this is not the case. If you procrastinate the right way, it can help you get your schoolwork done and improve the quality of your life.

It’s not like you need any help, but just in case you’re struggling, I have decided to share some of the best ways to procrastinate.

Guest Posts - Contribution Or Narcissism?

I recently submitted (and had published) my first guest post...I loved writing it and making my small contribution to the world but upon seeing it, up there and published, on another website, I was unbelievably chuffed!

And it has occurred to me that guest post-ing (and perhaps blogging for that matter!) is narcissistic.  After all, who am I to believe that what I have to say could possibly be interesting/entertaining/thought provoking to anyone?

It takes a bit of ego, don't you think?

The Comfort of a Good Book

How do you feel about the new e-readers? Are they the bane of the reading existence? Or are they the only way to read?

Now there are so many more distractions, mainly of the digital kind. A love of reading seems to be limited to the old--or those like myself who are becoming middle aged--and some of the studious young.

Perhaps I'm just old. Too old to appreciate the new-fangled electronic reading devices. Will I adapt? Most certainly. But I'm hoping that print books stick around just a little longer.

"The Vaccination Wars"

Being a critical medical researcher, I give advice to my friends, particularly my friends who are also parents, about vaccination.  I do not do so in a forceful manner, I just ask people to bear in mind what they are putting into their bodies, considering the toxic "non-medicinal ingredients" such as glycine and aluminum hydrochloride, that comprise a good deal of new vaccines.  I became quite passionate about arguing against vaccination during the H1N1 panic, and as new vaccines are being released en masse now - for example the "TwinRix" vaccine recommended for anyone traveling s

The Apocalypse Draws Nigh

Temperatures on earth have been rising and falling over billions of years, and evidence that man's pre-dominantly responsible is far from conclusive (particularly since our existence only counts for a tiny fraction of the evolutionary timeline). However, the danger of exhausting current energy supply is beyond dispute, and more likely to affect us sooner than the need to seek inspiration from a certain biblical shipwright.

Why Do So Many Blogs Fail?

If you think about blogging, and the reasons why people give it up, you can start to see that blogging is really a community thing and without community, it starts to get pointless, lonely, and feels like a waste of time.

This is the same for both business and personal blogs.

This topic generated a lot of interest on my blog and it's a great one to get people talking. Suggestions for developing the conversation:

To the woman in 5D

A passenger on my flight from Chicago O'Hare to Springfield blatantly disregarded safety protocol with regards to use of her mobile phone while in the aircraft: this is my open letter to her.

Have you witnessed similar behaviour? What did you do about it?

Or are you perhaps one of those who mirrors this lady's behaviour? Perhaps you could explain why?

Blogging is Like Sex – Anyone can do it…but few Master It

IE6 is ruining Web Design: Or is it us?

We all know how awful IE6 interprets CSS. We bend over backwards making hacks, conditional statements, and disgusting code so we can make the client happy. Because of our efforts, we get the paycheck, but we also ensure that IE6 will stick around that much longer.

My question is: Would you personally eliminate IE6 support in your design for the sake of progressing the web?

The Players Have Spoken & The Numbers Dont Lie / Plus A Mafia Wars Poll.

Is the clock ticking down for the social game giant? I hope not not just because I play the games but for the industry as a whole. Social gaming is big business and if Zynga falls what about the other companies who are investing heavily and trying to use Zynga’s model as a guide. Does it mean the end of social gaming across Facebook or will they learn from the mistakes of the social giant and avoid those issues with the players ? We also have a poll to see what bothers Mafia Wars players the most. Check it out some staggering number here.
