Are lower quality cameras better for making images for the Web

I have prepared thousands of jpeg images for the web for different websites, so I can definitely say it is something I have done a lot of.

As a result, I have a pretty good idea of which images are going to cause a problem, even before I start to prepare them.

By ‘problem’ I mean that the file size of the image is bigger than I would like.

Making Your Computer Run Faster

Recently I succeeded in helping my mother-in-law's laptop run faster through the use of some freeware optimization programs I list in my blog post, programs I use myself to keep my own computer running in top form. What freeware programs do you guys use to keep your computers optimized? Maybe there are a few I don't know about.

Sweetie Pie Deal: FONT-tastic!

I've found that one of the easiest - and most fun! - ways to jazz up packaging, labels, tags, signs, paper goods, blog or website, etc. is by using a wide variety of fonts and dingbats that match your theme/product/event/style. Luckily, they are in no short supply and can be found all over the net - for FREE! The following is a collection of some of my favorites, great sites where you can find tons more, and related links and resources...

Being Afraid of Nuclear Energy

A response to a New York Times op-ed piece written by Bob Herbert.  In his article, he argues why the United States is not ready for an expansion in nuclear power, citing the oil spill in the Gulf as an example of the devastation that could occur.  I argue that we are not only ready for nuclear power, but that technology has advanced far enough making the technology safer.

The Electrifying Edison

At Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Washington, children in Natosh Jones' third-grade class bend over model cars designed to run on solar power. Working with a team of professional scientists from NASA and other federal agencies, they're putting finishing touches on the cars. With a student body that is almost totally minority and predominantly poor, Martin Luther King is the kind of American public school that has too often failed its students, especially in science and mathematics.

COS News: Google boasts its spies are better than MicroSofts

COS News, Dark Misc: A misc. internal source at Google told COS reporters that the recent unsuccessful attempt by a Russian spy to infiltrate MicroSoft is further indication that MicroSoft is still a cold war company, while the more technically sophisticated and successful attempts by spies to infiltrate Google indicate that Google represents the future.

Does Alexa ranking matter to you?

One topic that bloggers and webmasters always seem to debate about is Alexa ranking.  In case you do not know what Alexa ranking is, it is a ranking system that is based on traffic to your site.  I relate it to the Nielsen ratings for TV.  Alexa makes their determinates by looking at traffic from those users that have the Alexa toolbar installed.  Many folks in the web world will make a judegement that the lower your Alexa scorte, the better your site.  For example, Google has an Alexa ranking of 1.  It seems that bloggers are split right down the middle with s

10 Things The ‘iPod Generation’ Will Never Experience…

Hey you kids! Get the hell off my lawn! With your gameboys and iPods and knife crime. You don’t know you’re born. Back in my day we’d walk seven miles to pick up a CD from our local record store. Uphill. Both ways.

Procrastinating? Click here

If there was a class on procrastination – I would get an A+. Currently, through my five years of university thus far, I have learned how to write an essay, how to study, but most of all, amazing ways to procrastinate!

Procrastination is often thought of as being a bad thing; however, in reality, this is not the case. If you procrastinate the right way, it can help you get your schoolwork done and improve the quality of your life.

It’s not like you need any help, but just in case you’re struggling, I have decided to share some of the best ways to procrastinate.

To the woman in 5D

A passenger on my flight from Chicago O'Hare to Springfield blatantly disregarded safety protocol with regards to use of her mobile phone while in the aircraft: this is my open letter to her.

Have you witnessed similar behaviour? What did you do about it?

Or are you perhaps one of those who mirrors this lady's behaviour? Perhaps you could explain why?

IE6 is ruining Web Design: Or is it us?

We all know how awful IE6 interprets CSS. We bend over backwards making hacks, conditional statements, and disgusting code so we can make the client happy. Because of our efforts, we get the paycheck, but we also ensure that IE6 will stick around that much longer.

My question is: Would you personally eliminate IE6 support in your design for the sake of progressing the web?

The Apocalypse Draws Nigh

Temperatures on earth have been rising and falling over billions of years, and evidence that man's pre-dominantly responsible is far from conclusive (particularly since our existence only counts for a tiny fraction of the evolutionary timeline). However, the danger of exhausting current energy supply is beyond dispute, and more likely to affect us sooner than the need to seek inspiration from a certain biblical shipwright.

Do you blog "anonymously"? Do you show your face to the world?

For my first six months as a blogger, I did not dare show an actual photograph of myself on my blog, or elsewhere on the web.  I was just a ghost with the screen name "scarsarestories".  I was a little paranoid, since I blog about contraversial, and sometimes local topics.  Then I thought, "Screw it!"  How many times a day is my face captured on camera while walking down the street, never mind when speaking with folks from around the world who read my writing and talk with me about it? - this is my dream come true!

Point and Shoot Camera Photography Tips

I was recently asked if I can write an article for point-and-shoot (or more specifically, fixed lens camera) users. I think it’s a great idea to do so. With the prices of entry-level digital SLRs dropping to insane levels, it is easy for a beginner to think that a professional-looking DSLR will create better pictures outright, which is totally untrue.

The article provides basic tips and basic theories on how ANYONE can take better pictures regardless of camera type.

"The Vaccination Wars"

Being a critical medical researcher, I give advice to my friends, particularly my friends who are also parents, about vaccination.  I do not do so in a forceful manner, I just ask people to bear in mind what they are putting into their bodies, considering the toxic "non-medicinal ingredients" such as glycine and aluminum hydrochloride, that comprise a good deal of new vaccines.  I became quite passionate about arguing against vaccination during the H1N1 panic, and as new vaccines are being released en masse now - for example the "TwinRix" vaccine recommended for anyone traveling s
