sometimes my child is unreachable

My four year old who has mild Cerebral Palsy is a strange cookie.  By strange I mean very intelligent, maybe too intelligent for his own good.  But he’s also very quirky.  He is particular about things.  He likes things to be a certain way.  For example, certain materials he won’t wear like chord or silk.  He will only sleep with certain pillows or blankets.  His food cannot touch if we are eating vegetables, potatoes and a meat but he can eat stew.  He has to sit on a seat without a cushion, cushions are a no no.  Toys have go in certain bins.  If they get mixed up he won’t play with anything but the ones in the basket down in the living room.  And if many of these things aren’t a certain way it tends to put him well… “out of sorts” you could say.

He also does not like to hug or kiss – unless it’s on his own terms and then it’s never for long.

I’ve learned as a mother to take my son for who he is, all the good and bad, rolled into what makes him the intelligent, smiley, sweet at times, not so sweet at times, little boy God blessed me with.  And I have struggled lately with how very different my boys are and my relationship with them.
