Pros and Cons

This blog post is largely a pro/con list concerning gaining a graduate degree or avoiding debt.  Mull it over with me, will you?  I've got to figure out what I'm going to do fairly soon because I need to register for classes this month, but I'd appreciate any thoughts, advice, related articles, or your personal experience with this issue!

Greed Takes A Holiday

We had a dream……and in that dream we saw Greed standing alone in front of the panoramic window of his imperial penthouse suite perched near the top of The Palm Hotel-Atlantis in Dubai. He gazed out at the glistening Persian Gulf with disconsolation, and tried to shake off the gnawing irritation he felt at the fact that the only palm frond island he could see from his luxurious living room was the Palm Jumeirah.  ...

ROI = Return on Investment: If it isn’t working why are you doing it?

ROI = Return On Investment. Although this term originated in financial circles I recently figured out it also applies to life in general.  For example:  relationships, education & training, networking, friendships. Sometimes we work so hard at what we’re doing we don’t take time to step back and be objective.

Is my business creating the maximum value?

One of the services I provide is a valuation to an owner that wants to sell their business. Almost without exception, the owner of the business overvalues their business. There are many reasons this happens but I think it mostly comes from business owners seeing shares trade on Wall Street based on the gross sales or gross revenue of the business. I have recently done valuations where the company value was just over $1,000,000 but the owner thought it was closer to $10,000,000.

Are you at peace with your lease?

For many small business owners, the single most important document for their business is the lease. Unfortunately a lease is generally a long and fairly complicated document. Because of its complexity, many small business owners either accept what they receive or do the bare minimum. Here are some suggestions for you, in no particular order.

Progress

Back in 2006 I photographed the beginning of a new housing development with an ironic Salmon Habitat sign in front of a landscape that has been totally cleared. Five years later I stopped to photograph the same location. Salmon stream gone and houses where it used to be. The protected Salmon Habitat sign remains - what it is protecting I'm no longer sure. Caddisfly Creek is essentially no more.

Identity Theft Manifesting Itself Through Surprise Arrival of IRS Form 1099-C

I've been asked 3 times in the last 24 hours or so about how and why an IRS 1099-C form was received when one was not expected because no debts were cancelled. The IRS 1099-C form is used by qualified lenders to report to the IRS as Income the Cancellation of a tax payer's debt, presuming debt was cancelled. Unfortunately I'm sad to report that this is the time of the year when many taxpayers find out through mysterious ways such as unsuspecting arrivals in the mail of IRS form 1099-C from a collection agency that they have been a victim of identity theft.

Being My Own Boss

Every since I became natural I have been looking into other opportunities to expand my knowledge. So I decided to start my own natural bath and body product line in hopes of success and encouragement to do other good things in life. I have started the process of building my business and I didn't know how much work it would be but hopefully I am prepared for anything. I have purchased  the main items totaling approx. $500, there may be some people who would say $500 is not enough but you have to understand I work part-time, a mother of two and a student.

"In The Hood"

As a former business owner in the city of Philadelphia and one with a love of photography and computers as well as graphic design I took to the streets of Philadelphia to do a photo shoot on a neighborhood that could use a little luv. The question of gentrification in inner city neighborhoods is always a hot topic. While snapping my old film Nikon I found a woman who thought I was sent from Philadelphia's City Hall to clean up the neighborhood and help the citizens keep it clean. I could not help wonder how many other folks feel the same way.
