Pets

Is living a green life as important for your pets as for you?

If you think it is important to live ethically and organically, both because it is important for the environment and for your own health, then do you also extend this to your pets?

Remembering that Animals Aren't Human

When does an aspiration to be humane to animals actually disguise an inset belief that animals are human? Being a life long lover of animals of all kinds, I was given pause by a number of events that caused me to ponder this exact question.

A number of questions are raised at the end of the post about how we eat, how we should treat our pets and animal "emotions", in general.

Why Fiber Is A Bad Thing -- At Least For Me

This is the very beginning of my journey into becoming a full-fldged handspinner.

This explains why such a simple thing, like buyng a spinning wheel, suddenly drove me to find a resource for local wool.  That resource became a track to owning my own alpaca.

It also explains how I came to be preparing my home for the arrival of two baby English angora rabbits, once they are old enough to leave their mother.

Oh, the fun we are going to have.

Ever wonder why?

Ever wonder why you are who you are?  What events in your life have the largest impact into making you....you?  What events in your past are the reason you do what you do and how you do it or why?   For me...I have a fear of not knowing how deep the water is in a lake.  Such a fear that I can not swin in a lake because I have to be able to push myself off the bottom.  A pool no problem......

Ailurophobes -

I'm certainly not an ailurophobe. What about you?

An ailurophobe is a person with an irrational fear or hatred of cats. Famous ailurophobes from history include William Shakespeare, Ghengis Khan, Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar. But my favourite ailurophobe was the French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte who was known to break into a sweat at the mere mention of a cat. Exiled to the rat infested island of St Helena, the generous hearted English people decided to help by sending a ship load of cats....see the blog post for the full story.

Shopping for Unusual Gifts

When you give an ordinary run-of-the-mill gift, sure you fulfill an obligation, but that's about all you do. When you give unique, unusual gifts, you show the people receiving them that you really care. You show that you took the time to seek out something different—something that shows you're giving a gift because you want to, not simply because you have to.

I love to shop for birthays and holidays. I am always looking for something different to give. What unusual gifts do you give or would like to receive as a gift?

Read about upcycling coffee chaff for chicken coops

I read an article that suggested coffee chaff, which is a waste product of the roasting process, could be used as an alternative to wood shavings as litter in the chicken coop. This seemed like such a great idea that I set about finding a coffee roaster ....

Fun Pet Stories

Shopping for holiday gifts, I came across a pet product that we could have used as a gift when we lived in Wisconsin. It's a solar powered water bowl heater that keeps the water from freezing. One night our dog's water froze over and our poor lab licked it and his tongue got stuck! What are your funny pet stories about living in the cold, cold winter?

It breathes therefore it lives!

What kind of person kills an animal? What kind of person CAN kill an animal in the first place? Personally I wouldn’t be able to do it, even if it would be necessary for my own survival. I can’t do it, I literally don’t hurt a fly. If there is a bug in my house, I want someone to catch it and put it outside, and if I accidentally step on a snail and kill it, I feel really bad about it. I feel bad because I ended someone’s life. It doesn’t matter how small this living creature is; it breathes therefore it lives! That is what I say anyways.

Scat Cat

Looking for suggestions on how to deal with neighbours' cats who are doing their business in our flowerbeds. I've tried a couple of things without success, the cats keep coming back to their prefered "litter box". Neighbours aren't helpfull either.

Goldfish Bowls Kill Goldfish

Unfortunately, the term "goldfish bowl" is very misleading. Goldfish are unable to survive in a bowl for extended periods of time, especially if you plan on raising a healthy fish that lives a full 10-20 years. In addition to being much too small for a full grown goldie, a bowl is too small to create enough of a surface disturbance required for proper aeration.

Frugal Fridays: Natural Remedies for Dogs

Flea and tick season is upon us. If it isn't in your area, it soon will be. I hate it. I hate having to spend tons of money for my dogs to not be a host for stupid little insects. I hate having to check my body and the dogs whenever we come back from a walk in the woods. So what am I to do?
