One of the finest minds of the 20th Century, explaining the attraction of doubt & the joy of learning & discovery.
In this extract from the 1981 BBC2 episode of Horizon entitled: The Pleasure Of Finding Things Out. Richard wonders why so many people appear to be content with a certain view about the universe, even though there is no evidence to support their ideas. What is more confusing is that many do not question its claims?
Culturally and historically, it has always been a part of human nature to emphasize the importance of being one of a chosen few and our special place in the world. This POV is a remnant of our hunter gathering past when being part of a group was extremely important for survival.
Only in the past 500 years a handful of humans started to be concerned with what is evidently true, and it was only 150 years ago that Darwin proved to the world that Humans were just Mammals, a concept that many still find difficult to accept.
