"The Flaws Are Fine."
Somebody once told me that in ancient Chinese art, the great artists almost always included a deliberate flaw in their work. It made it human, authentic. What if the same kind of thing applies to creative writing? Maybe a little "messiness" or something that is just a little "off" in our creative work is not a bad thing. Maybe it's a really beautiful thing. Maybe it's what makes it uniquely our own.

Flaws Are What Make Us Human
Laura Page was blogging about her writing style but I’m taking this in a different direction.
Flaws:
Everyone has them. We shouldn’t hide them. We should proudly display them. Flaws are what make us human.

Writing Rebellion; Messiness Makes Me Happy
The way I see it, there is a freedom in art. Whether you are a painter or a writer, the act of self expression is limitless and is such a deeply personal statement about the creator and their feelings. So, how can one place rules on that? It (to me) would be like telling an artist they can paint the grass but they may only use green, the sun but only orange. Or telling a poet the only way they can describe grief is by using the word sad. As far as punctuation is concerned, I do agree with the need, if only to place emphasis on a line, such as a pause for dramatic effect. However, everything else is just to-may-to, toe-mah-toe. How do you feel about the art of expression?

The Flaws are Fine
I expect most people in a perfectly normal body would feel relieved to know that perfection will always be out of their grasp but I feel vindicated to know that I’m never going to be perfect. I can accept myself as I am and be delighted that I’m as perfect as I’m going to get.

this is a great theory/practice!
This article talks about the old chinese way of creating art... with flaws in it. I love this idea! I am an ageing punk rocker, and have tried to do something like this in my stories/essays, etc... This is more than clever, this is beautiful. Awesome article.

Right up my alley.
My blog has be referred to by one of my more literary friends as a "conversationalist style". I can live with that! It is how I talk, and folks usually do not correct my talk grammar. Hey, gotta go write a blog about that.
Enjoy.

The Glourious Messiness of Writing
Laura Page, the author of the Literary Legs blog, has written an insightful post titled, "The Flaws are Fine." The entry is both inspirning and empowering.
It was perfect for me, as I am one of those writers who over edits as I write. I've tried to get over this OCD behavior. I know it can keep a writer from entering the "flow," but, alas, I continue to do it.
Laura's entry was a soothing post to read. I'm going to try not to worry over the flaws as I begin to create something new.
As Laura discusses messiness she says, "Maybe it's what makes it uniquely our own."
Sounds like a good idea to me.
