Do Folks Not Read Anymore?

This isn’t about book sales or publicity; it’s a legitimate concern—one I’ve had for quite some time. What happened to the days when you looked forward to the book fair coming to your school? What happened to the days when a library card was protected like a credit card?

This isn’t about book sales or publicity; it’s a legitimate concern—one I’ve had for quite some time. What happened to the days when you looked forward to the book fair coming to your school? What happened to the days when a library card was protected like a credit card? What about the days when you couldn’t wait to get the next book in The Babysitters Club and Nancy Drew series (I feel a little nostalgia coming on)?  Now, it’s all about the latest Rated R movie when Halle is going to show her boobs or the next Grand Theft Auto video game. I don’t know about other parents, but reading is a regular curriculum in my household. Even if it’s just a trip to the grocery story, I get my stepson into the habit of reading ice cream labels, cereal boxes, and candy wrappers (all things that he loves) to keep his mind stimulated.

Let me be blunt; our world seems to want to take the stupid and lazy route these days. Sooner than later, childhood obesity is going to be the LEAST of our problems.

Do you have a reading culture?

This post uses Ben Carson's life as an example of what reading regularly can do to increase a child's performance in school. I also answer a few questions about my reading habits.

When Books Were Our Friends...

What ever happened to those days where we use to run to the Book Mobile after school to find that new book we were waiting for? After reading a blog post on Angelique The Novelist, those days came rushing back into my mind. I can still remember those days like they were yesterday. Back then I could not wait to get out of school to check out the new Goosebumps or the new Sweet Valley High books. And even though I am not that old (23 is not old, right?), kids a few years younger than me have no idea about the Book Mobiles and Book Fairs that use to come to our schools.

Books for Movies

Imagine that for the rest of your life you could only pick one thing...books or movies....what would you pick? Would it be a hard choice for you? Would you miss the other?
I am not a tv watcher so it's easy for me to choose books. I do admit there are a few movies I would miss like The King and I and Gone with the Wind.
How about you?

The Revolution Has Been Canceled

Dear Cracker Army :
I'm sorry to have to inform you all that The Cracker Revolution is being canceled. The Leadership Counsel recently sent out Notices of Organization informing you all as to when the meetings would take place. Come the day for action NOBODY showed up. We can only assume that you were all too busy watching Beck , Hannity et tal to bother reading the notice.
Enjoy Obamanation
Yours in great frustration
CLOTUS { Cracker Leader Of The United States.}
Why would people read any more when watching Jerry Springer , Dancing With The Stars , Jersey Shore and Grey's Anatomy takes so much less effort?

The State of Reading

I used to download sample LSAT tests to determine if I have the capacity to become a law student (which I may consider later in life). In one test I saw a passage narrating how communication evolved through time. At first, before writing systems were discovered, people used to exchange information orally. Over time, as you expect, people moved on to print which helped historians dig our past. In addition, reading and writing has always been associated with an increase in cognitive and comprehensive skills.

Remember That Book You Loved From Your Childhood Days?

Every reader has a journey. I ran across a blog post by Angelique, the novelist of Leveled Mind Confused Heart. In this post, Angelique wonders where all the readers have gone. She steps back to reminisce how she got started and then brings a call to action for parents that I wanted to share with all of you. Check out the post by clicking here.
What books do you remember from childhood that you pulled into becoming an avid reader or inspired you to write? If you have kids, ask them what their favorite series is and post it here. It could inspire another child to check it out.
