All Your Pink Parts

As any parent knows, the moment you have a mobile child, you no longer have privacy. I haven’t peed on my own since 2007. That said, as your child grows older, that group bathroom break turns into an anatomy lesson. My husband and I provided Ella answers to “whas dat?” with the anatomically correct terms when asked.

After I posted this blog, I was surprised by the response I got from other parents.  Many agreed with using anatomically correct terms with their children, while others felt the words were much too vulgar for children to use.  I felt this might be a topic of discussion that would provide strong opinions one way or the other, and I am intrigued by opinions and reasonings.  So, penis or pee pee?  Which one is it for your kids?

Potty Training Body Parts

We've been dealing something similar with our Little Guy. We try to use the correct terms for his body parts and he seems to understand it pretty well. He's known for a while that he has a penis. However, he's reaching a point where he's now recognizing the difference between boys and girls.

Are anatomically correct terms okay?

I read a delightful and amusing post today, All Your Pink Parts, over at The Dirty Mommy Club blog.
Stephanie talks about the all-too-familiar experience of our young children blurting out their understanding of all sorts of new vocabulary words in the most public places. ;-)
It got me wondering… what’s with the ‘discomfort’ around our children being very matter-of-fact about being able to name ALL body parts?
And why does it seem more acceptable to use childish words for some body parts… though certainly not most. And I don’t just mean hearing children use words like penis or vagina… there are plenty of adults who seem to have some reluctance. Take Oprah… even she finds it challenging to call a vagina a vagina. What is up with that?!?!
